Many years ago, in 1675, a prominent man named the Marquis of Valleumbroso discovered large amounts of gold and silver in a mine called Yasos. At that time, people from the Andean villages were forced to work in the mines under very harsh conditions.

One day, a peasant named Diego Quispe defended a fellow worker who was being punished by the mine’s overseer. This angered the overseer, who ordered Diego to be locked up and punished the following day. That night, Diego managed to escape and ran towards a village called Chinchero. On his way, he reached a place called Huanca. As dawn was breaking and he risked being seen, he decided to hide in a cave formed by large rocks. There, he found refuge and began praying so that he would not be found.

When night fell and Diego left to continue his journey, he realized there was no moonlight, and everything was dark. Suddenly, a bright light illuminated his face. Looking up, he saw Jesus with wounds and blood, as if He had been beaten. Astonished, Diego knelt to worship Him. Jesus spoke to him and said:
“Diego, I have chosen you to deliver a message of love and kindness. This place will be a fountain of forgiveness and hope. Go to your village, speak with the priest, take your first communion, and return. I will be here. Leave at dawn.”

Diego obeyed, and in June of the same year, he returned with a group of people and the parish priest of Chinchero. Diego entered the cave first and once again saw Jesus with fresh wounds. He then called the others so they could also witness the apparition.

Subsequently, an anonymous painter immortalized the image of Christ on a rock, turning it into a sacred icon for believers. Since then, the sanctuary has become a pilgrimage site for people from all over Peru and the world.

Second Story

Once upon a time, there was a wealthy miner named Don Pedro Valero who was gravely ill. No doctor could find a cure for him, and all treatments had failed. One day, a renowned foreign doctor arrived in the city. He was immediately summoned and promised anything he desired if he could heal Don Pedro.

The doctor agreed to help and prescribed a special water treatment for five days. Don Pedro diligently followed the treatment and fully recovered. Grateful, he offered all his riches to the doctor, but the doctor replied:
“If you want to do something for me, visit me at my house.”

Don Pedro went to find him and arrived at Huanca. There, he entered an altar and, to his surprise, saw the image of Jesus, his savior, etched on a rock.

From that moment on, many people began visiting the site, calling it the Lord of Huanca. Today, thousands visit the sanctuary, considering Him a father and healer of all ailments.
