The courtship behavior of the Cock of the Rock is one of the most spectacular in the animal kingdom. Males gather in courtship courts, display areas where they perform leks (acrobatic movements), dances and vocalizations to attract females. These dances include leaps and head movements that highlight their crest and plumage.
Females observe and select the most impressive males to mate with, after which the females usually incubate the eggs and care for the chicks, while the males continue to mate with other females.
Curious fact: The male’s crest becomes more prominent during the mating season and can reach up to twice the size of his head.

The Cock of the Rock is primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits it finds in the jungle. It may also eat seeds, insects and small vertebrates occasionally.
The fruit diet of the Cock of the Rock includes guavas, figs, bananas, berries and seeds from trees such as Cecropia. As for insects, it consumes ants, beetles, crickets, butterflies and other insects from the foliage and forest floor. It also occasionally feeds on small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs and snakes.
A varied and balanced diet is crucial to the health and survival of the cock-of-the-rock. Deforestation and other factors that threaten their habitat can negatively affect their food sources and thus their survival. Therefore, it is vital to protect and conserve their natural habitat.
Curious fact:These magnificent birds play a crucial role in dispersing seeds in the rainforest, thus helping to conserve forests.
