Welcome to a unique journey towards the grandest celebration of Inca culture: Inti Raymi 2024, the Festival of the Sun. Immerse yourself in a fascinating journey where history, tradition, and the essence of Cusco intertwine to create a dazzling spectacle that endures through time.
Imagine being in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, surrounded by majestic mountains and historical remnants. It is here that the celebration of Inti Raymi comes to life, paying homage to the sun god and marking the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere.
Inti Raymi, meaning “Festival of the Sun” in Quechua, is a unique sensory experience. From the grandeur of participants’ attire to the resonance of traditional music, each element contributes to the greatness of this celebration.
Inti Raymi is special for various reasons beyond being merely a celebration. Several elements come together to make this festival a unique and meaningful experience:
Inti Raymi is an ancient Incan celebration honoring the sun god (Inti in Quechua). It is one of the most important festivals of the Incas and took place on the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, usually around June 24.
Inti Raymi has its origins before the Inca Empire, celebrated by pre-Incan cultures such as the Wari, Tiwanaku, Chimú, among others. With the rise of the Inca Empire in the 13th century AD under the rule of Pachacútec, the celebration gained greater importance.
It took place in the main square of Cusco, the capital of the empire, with the participation of the Inca (ruler) as well as the nobility and priests. Worship was offered to the god Inti with offerings, sacrifices of animals and llamas, as well as dances and music.
During the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, Inti Raymi was banned as it was considered a pagan celebration. However, the Incan population continued to perform rituals privately to honor the Sun.
Since 1944, Inti Raymi was revived as a theatrical representation of the ancient Incan ceremony. It takes place every year on June 24 in the Inca citadel of Sacsayhuamán, on the outskirts of Cusco. Hundreds of actors and dancers, dressed in traditional attire, recreate rituals and dances in honor of the god Inti.
The Inca makes a ceremonial offering of chicha and coca leaves to the image of the Sun. Llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas also participate in the colorful spectacle, attended by thousands of spectators and tourists. It is one of the most popular festivals in Andean Peruvian folklore.
The Inti Raymi festival in 2024 will take place on June 24, extending throughout the day and divided into three parts.
The start, the first staging of Inti Raymi in Cusco takes place on the green esplanade of the Qoricancha temple, meaning “Enclosure of Gold.” Its interior walls were lined with gold sheets and it was built by order of Inca Pachacútec.
Initial rituals are performed here, where the Inca, accompanied by royalty, priests, and La Qoya, pays homage to the sun god Inti by making offerings. With their words, they invoke the powerful sun and ask for success in the ceremony. “Oh, sun god, our father, mighty sun of eternal happiness, warm source and principle of life. From this, your sacred dwelling in Cusco, where you reside with the Moon, the Lightning, and the Thunder, your children from the Four Regions Empire humbly greet you on your jubilee day.” This is the beginning of Inti Raymi, a ceremony celebrating life and fertility, and it is one of the most important in Incan culture.
After the completion of the first part of Inti Raymi at Qoricancha, the Inca, his royal entourage, and the Imperial Army begin a solemn procession through ancient Incan streets, including Calle Loreto, leading them to the Plaza de Armas, which during the Incan empire was called Auqaypata or Plaza del Guerrero, where the ceremony took place entirely, in the midst of the great ushnu or ceremonial platform.
At this location, the Ñustas, Aqllas (chosen ones), and the entire imperial army are already present, positioned in the Plaza de Armas to await the arrival of the Inca. In this scenario, the Inca, as the supreme ruler of the Empire, performs the Coca ceremony and through it invokes the Apus to grant them protection and guidance.
After the culmination of the Coca ceremony in the Plaza del Aucaypata, the Inca, his royal entourage, and the Imperial Army move to the impressive esplanade of the archaeological park of Sacsayhuamán, meaning “satisfied falcon,” where the central ceremony takes place.
It is a fortress built entirely of stone at an altitude of 3,555 meters above sea level, one kilometer away from the Cusco neighborhood of Qolqanpata.
The solemn rituals of chicha, sacred fire, the sacrifice of the llama (symbolic Andean camelid), and the auguries take place on this imposing stage. The ritual of Sankhu or sacred bread, as well as the Q’ochurikuy or burst of popular exaltation, also occur.
